Domain Registration
Domain registration is the process by which a domain is changed into the ownership of either an individual or a company, for a period of time. The period usually differs, but normal registration period is for a year, after which the domain is released from the ownership, if not renewed.
The complete governing authority for the Domains registered is ICANN, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Each domain registered anywhere in the world is added to the database registry for the ICANN. ICANN is the complete authority for the uniqueness for the domains to a single ip.
DOMAIN REGISTRAR
Domain registrars are companies who handle the registration of the domain name and Domain Registration process. Any company who would like to register a domain name to them or any individual want to do domain registration for himself should be contacting the Domain Registrar to proceed with the same. Domain registrar would be including a cost/fess for this process, and a renewal period. Domain registration details has to be provided as well, like the name servers of the server where the domain is hosted, the contact information of the owner of domain name, which would be public etc.
Domain registration details can be publicly available via the WHOIS database, via any search engine software’s.
STEPS FOR REGISTERING A DOMAINNAME
- The customer should first select a free domain name, which is available for any user for registering. The search engines can help to check if a domain is free for us, or even a query on the WHOIS.com / WHOIS.org etc. sites can reveal the status of the selected domain name.
- Once domain name is selected, the next step is to choose a host/server for hosting the domain name. Any web hosting companies can be chosen for this purpose, the person would need to order a hosting plan with the web host.
- The hosting company would provide a welcome email to the domainer once the order is paid, the welcome email would contain the details of the name server on which the domain name is to be hosted. If the person needs a custom name server for use, then two ip’s resolving to the server would be provided in the welcome email.
- Now we have to, as the next step, select a domain registrar to proceed with the registration of the selected domain name.
- Domain registrar would ask for details such as the name servers for the server (as per welcome email) or the ip address incase the customer need a custom name server. Domain name and the custom name server has to be registered, the server by default would have been already registered by the webhosting owner. So only incase where the customer needs his own private name servers, would he need to register them.
- Domain name is registered to name servers and name servers are registered to the ip provided in the welcome email.
- Once the above step is done, it all depends on the DNS propagation delay. Domain registrar updates the ICANN/ WHOIS databases with the new domain name and server details. The ICANN has a huge database of such domain name, located all around the world, the delay in the DNS propagation is for all the ICANN registry databases to get updated about the new domain name registered in the internet.
- Once the database of ICANN is completely updated, the domain would be accessible via the internet.
Following the above steps, the person is now the owner of his domain name, until the renewal period.
