The technology of Virtualization gave rise to the revolutionary Virtual Private Server Hosting or  VPS Hosting.

Think of a large apartment complex with numerous apartments in each floor. Each apartment has its own systems of gas connection, drainage, plumbing etc and the whole apartment complex also has similar systems. A virtualization concept also works on similar lines , where the apartment complex is termed as the node and the individual apartments are known  as VPS or Containers. This  process of dividing a large server (node) to small virtual servers (VPS) and selling the VPS is popularly known as VPS Web Hosting.

The concept of Virtualization started with OpenVZ, which is under under GNU GPL. The popular Virtuozzo is derived from OpenVZ and Virtuozzo has outgrown its parent by offering VPS Hosting over Windows .  OpenVZ supports a wide variety of OS such as RHEL,CentOS, Suse , Debian etc

Apart from OpenVZ, Xen is another virtualization standard which again comes under the GNU GPL. This VPS Hosting method also supports  Windows®, Linux®, Solaris®, and various versions of the BSD operating systems. Xen supports cross platform virtualization where a Windows guest can be installed on a Linux Host

The latest technology for virtualization by Microsoft is called Hyper-V, which is again support cross platform, where a linux guest can be installed over the windows 2008 host.

The VPS Hosting improved its stand , when management tools such as VZMC (Virtuozzo management Console), HyperVM, HSPComplete etc was introduced. This helped the VPS Hosting to be handled by anyone without any knowledge on how things worked in the server back end.

HyperVM / Lxadmin created an era of Cheap VPS Hosting, which was however put aside to dark (temporarily) with the death of its creator. Virtuozzo remains to be the leader in the VPS Web Hosting and its position seems to be unchallenged currently.

VPS Web Hosting is the best choice to any Web Host who have a reasonably large Reseller Web Hosting account as the pricing turns out to be half that of a dedicated server. However in this form of Hosting, your get what you pay for
